Premier League Shots on Target Props: How to Judge a Player Prop Before You Back It
⚡ Executive Brief & Key Takeaways
  • Primary Signal: Premier League Shots on Target Props: How to Judge a Player Prop Before You Back It
  • Overview: Shots on target props look simple, but the price is often poor. Judge them on per-90 data, shot location and the opponent before you back a player....
  • Verification: Analyzed and compiled by Global Football Odds editorial monitoring desk.

Player shots on target props have become one of the most popular Premier League markets, because they turn a single player into a bet you can follow all game. A line of one or two shots on target sounds easy when a star striker is involved, yet the odds on the big names are often short for a reason: bookmakers know casual punters back favourites. Erling Haaland, for example, recorded at least two shots on target in five of his first eight league starts in the 2026/27 season, which is strong, but the price on that line still has to be worth taking. The job is not to pick the best shooter, it is to find the shooter whose price is wrong.

Start with per-90 numbers rather than season totals. A player with 10 shots on target in 596 minutes is averaging about 1.5 per 90, which is a much clearer signal than a raw total padded by extra games. Check total shots too: a forward hitting the target with nine of 17 shots is finishing chances efficiently, while a player taking lots of shots from distance may rarely test the keeper. Shot location matters as well. Shots from inside the box land on target far more often than hopeful efforts from 25 yards, so a midfielder who arrives late in the box can be better value than a winger who shoots from wide areas.

The opponent shapes the prop just as much as the player. Teams that defend deep and in numbers cut the space in the box, while sides that press high and leave gaps behind their defence invite shots. Look at how many shots on target the opposition concedes per game, and whether they concede them centrally or from wide areas. A striker facing a side that has conceded 17 shots in a game is in a different position from one facing a team that allows only a handful of efforts. Fixture context, home advantage and whether the opponent needs to chase the game all push the numbers up or down.

Team news and role changes are the next filter. A player moved to a wider role, a striker playing without his usual creative partner, or a midfielder asked to sit deeper will all see their shot numbers fall, even if their season average looks good. Conversely, a player taking penalties or free kicks, or one who has just been moved into a central striking role, may be underpriced because the market is still using his old numbers. Read the last three or four match reports, not just the season stats, to catch these shifts early.

Finally, compare prices across bookmakers and be honest about the margin. Player props often carry a higher overround than the match result, sometimes above 110 per cent, so shopping around for even a small price improvement matters over a season. If the best price implies a chance higher than the player's recent hit rate, skip the bet. A disciplined prop bettor backs fewer players, at better prices, and keeps a simple record of hit rates so the next weekend's picks are based on evidence, not reputation. Only bet money you can afford to lose.

Shots on target props reward patience and data. Use per-90 rates, shot location, opponent weakness and role changes to build a shortlist, then let the price decide. When the numbers and the odds agree, you have a bet worth taking; when they do not, the smartest move is to watch the player and wait for a better spot.

Key takeaway: a shots on target prop is only as good as the data behind it. Use per-90 rates and shot location, check the opponent's defensive record, and watch for role changes in the team news. When the numbers and the price agree, take the bet; when they do not, save your stake for a player whose record the market has not yet caught up with.
